From ABS-CBN (Apr 1): Suspected NPA rebels torch heavy equipment in Davao City
DAVAO CITY - Suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) torched heavy equipment in three far-flung barangays in Davao City over the weekend, police spokesperson Senior Inspector Maria Teresita Gaspan said.
At around 11 p.m. Saturday, undetermined numbers of lawless armed groups burned 4 dump trucks and 1 backhoe owned by Leonard Trucking Services (LTS) in Barangay Callawa, Buhangin District, Davao City.
The armed men, on board a four-wheeled vehicle, then went to Sitio Sta. Maria, Barangay Fatima, Paquibato Dstrict, Davao City, and burned 2 heavy equipment, with the cost of damage pegged at P15 million.
Police said residents heard gunfire before the men left the area.
On early Sunday morning, around eight armed men trooped to Barangay Dalagdag in Calinan, Davao City, and burned a backhoe unit worth more or less P8 million.
The separate incidents occurred amid the observance of Holy Week and days after NPA celebrated their 50th anniversary last March 29.
