From Update Philippines (Nov 25): Duterte convenes Cabinet for AFP procurement projects
President Rodrigo Duterte convened with his Cabinet members to discuss the updates on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) procurement projects in Malacañang Palace on November 23.
The President in his recent speeches mentioned about procuring at least 23 attack helicopters, rocket launchers, and new generation of firearms.
The Department of National Defense (DND) confirmed the plan on getting new attack helicopters. “We have programmed procurement of 24 attack helicopters under the Second Horizon of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program (RAFPMP),” DND public affairs office chief Arsenio Andolong said.
The RAFPMP is now on the last year of its first horizon. In 2018, the second horizon will start next year and will end 2022. The final horizon will be from 2023 to 2028.
“We are awaiting for the final approval of the Office of the President on the RAFPMP Second Horizon,” Andolong said.
The DND previously told Update Philippines that “the DND will continue to acquire defense equipment for the AFP for the use of individual soldiers, such as rifle and force protection equipment.”
“At the same time, we will pursue the development and enhancement of our territorial defense capability by acquiring major defense assets such as, but not limited to, radars, fighter aircraft, frigates, patrol boats, attack and utility helicopters, missile systems, and unmanned aerial systems,” DND added.
