President Rodrigo Duterte on October 17 declared the liberation of Marawi City from terrorists composed of Maute terrorist group and Abu Sayyaf members.
“I hereby declare Marawi City liberated from the terrorists, we can now proceed to the rehabilitation,” said President Duterte before government forces in Marawi City.
The declaration came one day after government forces killed terrorist leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute in a before dawn operation on October 16.
The Marawi City conflict started on May 23 when government forces tried to arrest Isnilon Hapilon.
The ISIS-inspired terrorists were then planning to take over the whole city and were forced to already implement their plan.
