From Update Philippines (Oct 17): Is PH military getting AK-101?
The Philippine military is set to receive 5,000 units of Kalashnikov rifles well known as AK (Avtomat Kalashnikova) next week, however, no official information was yet given on what variant will be donated.
Kalashnikov rifle has different variants which differ from design to cartridge or ammunition they use.
The famous AK-47 uses 7.62×39mm ammunition; the more latest AK-12 and AK-15 use 5.45×39mm and 7.62×39mm, respectively.
Moreover, there are Kalashnikov rifle variants, AK-101 and AK-102, that use 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition which is the caliber of rifles in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Though the Russian government is providing ample amount of ammunition, the Philippine military will be more capable of sustaining the use of Russian rifles if their ammunition will be same with what the Philippine military is already using and producing through Government Arsenal.
With these, Russia will most probably donate the AK-101 or AK-102. AK-102 assault rifle is a shorter carbine version of AK-101 rifle.
On October 25 or maybe days earlier, the exact variant of Kalashnikov rifles that Russia will provide will be known. Russia is also providing 20 military trucks.
