AFP silences guns in observance of Eid'l Adha

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 1): AFP silences guns in observance of Eid'l Adha

As the Muslim world commemorates Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice Friday, military operations in Marawi City were momentarily suspended early in the morning to show their respect for the religious event.

"Early this morning prior to the moment for prayers, we momentarily silenced our guns and ceased operations to show respect to today's observance of Eid'l Adha," AFP spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said.

"The silence was observed for the entirety of the time for prayers," he added. President Rodrigo Duterte earlier declared September 1 a regular holiday in observance of the Muslim festival Eid'l Adha.

The declaration was issued through Proclamation No. 297 which the President signed Aug. 29, 2017.

The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) has recommended September 1, which falls on a Friday, as the day corresponding to the observance of Eid'l Adha based on the Islamic Calendar.

Eid'l Adha is one of Islam's two major feasts that is celebrated worldwide each year. The festival commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, as an act of obedience to God's command.
