President Duterte picks Ridon to chair urban poor commission

From InterAksyon (Aug 31): President Duterte picks Ridon to chair urban poor commission

President Rodrigo Duterte has named former Kabataan partylist representative Terry Ridon as the new chairperson of the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP).

Ridon vowed to adhere to the President's policy pronouncement of "no demolition without relocation" of urban poor settlements.

"We cannot allow our urban poor to wallow further in poverty by driving them out of their homes without any recourse nor assistance from government," Ridon said in a statement.

Ridon elaborated that, among the first items of his agenda will be a review of the relocation projects of the national and local government "to determine whether the relocation sites are adequately developed with acceptable standards for socialized housing."

He observed that many relocation sites have substandard housing facilities and infrastructure, little or no access to potable water systems, and are situated far from work opportunities and public services.

"Inadequate infrastructure and services have driven many of our relocated families back to the slums or into hazardous areas, as well," he said.

"Many urban poor families comprise the base of employees in government and the private sector. Their welfare in terms of security of employment and living conditions are also the main priorities of the Duterte administration," he added.

  1. President Duterte appoints yet another commie to a government post. Former congressional representative Terry Ridon is a long-time Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-associated activist dating back to his student days at the University of the Philippines (UP) where he chaired the radical League of Filipino Students (LFS) from 2009 to 2011. The LFS is a member of the main CPP multisectoral umbrella front organization the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN-New Patriotic Alliance).

Furthermore, the Kabataan (Youth) party list mentioned in the article above and for which Ridon served as congressional representative, is a CPP-linked political front and a member of the MAKABAYAN bloc, a coalition of about a dozen or so CPP-affiliated political parties.
