Army prepares Negros Occidental for insurgency-free NIR target by June 2016

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 14): Army prepares Negros Occidental for insurgency-free NIR target by June 2016

The 303rd Infantry Brigade (IB) of the Philippine Army is working on a “normalized” peace and order situation in Negros Occidental as part of the 3rd Infantry Division's target to make the newly created Negros Island Region (NIR) insurgency-free by next year.

Lt. Col. Darren Comia, executive officer of the 303rd IB, said that the overall peace and order situation in the province is doing well.

He added that Negros Occidental has been declared “peaceful and ready for further development” and the 303rd IB is working on sustaining it through various activities.

Comia led the civic action conducted by the 303rd IB with the Mosser Foundation and the municipal government of San Enrique, at the town’s gym over the weekend.

He said the activity is also part of the Peace Month celebration that kicked off last Sept. 2. Comia added that the services rendered during the civic action included dental and medical consultation, free haircut, and free massage.

Also taking part in the activity were the Provincial Health Office and the Philippine Red Cross. He said other NGOs and civic groups also joined and rendered free legal services as well as also distributed eye glasses.

“These activities we are doing now are part of our efforts to sustain the peace initiatives and the gains we have so made so far,” Comia said.

He pointed out that after the declaration of the province as “peaceful and ready for further development,” what follows is the normalization phase wherein it is the local government units that take the lead in the overall situation as far as the peace and security are concerned.

“We will just be supporting them,” he stressed.

He further said that the military is indeed envisioning an insurgency-free NIR by next year. “We are aiming for that, hopefully we can meet the target and realized a normalized province,” he added.
