CALBIGA, Samar -- The Philippine Army’s 87th Infantry Battalion (IB) based in
this town is vent on pursuing their civil military mission in different remote
villages in Samar , known to be a rebel
infested area.
The battalion will focus on extending medical assistance,
participate in rebuilding process, and distribute basic school supplies to poor
school children in villages.
Soldiers of the 87th IB is convinced that continuing to
educate and constant communicating with the locals, as well as providing them
the basic services they need is a key to curb insurgency problem in Samar.
“Our main goal is to provide presence in the area,
presenting a different approach to driving back the enemy and gaining the
confidence of local villagers,” said 87th IB battalion commander Lt. Col.
George Domingo.
“Building relationships with villagers and bringing the
basic social services to outlying areas is a way to gain their confidence,”
Domingo said.
The official said that soldiers have to revisit villages
several times just to ensure that people are educated and well-informed.
Troopers help the villagers determine and identify their
needs to facilitate government’s response to basic needs, according to Domingo.
