The South Korean "Mulgae" landing craft unit
(LCU), which was donated to the Philippine Navy (PN) last June 2014, is now
undergoing machinery and equipment repairs at the Cavite Navy Yard.
"The LCU arrived last May 30. It was shipped here from South Korea .
The ship is now undergoing some machinery and equipment repairs by our shipyard
in Cavite ,"
PN flag officer-in-command Vice Admiral Jesus Millan said in a message to the
PNA on Wednesday.
Millan said the government shouldered the shipping cost of
P16 million.
The South Korean government expressed its commitment to
donate an LCU to the Philippines
during Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin's visit in Seoul last year.
This is aside from the 16 rubber boats which are expected to
beef up the Philippines '
humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capability.
LCUs are used to ferry troops and other equipment to areas
where larger ships, by course of their large draft, are unable to dock.
