A militiaman was killed after an undetermined number of New
People's Army (NPA) fighters attacked an outpost in Barangay Banlag, Monkayo
town, Compostela Tuesday night.
1st Lt. Vergel Lacambra, 10th Infantry Division
spokesperson, said the attack took place at 10 p.m.
He added that rebels from the Southern Mindanao Regional
Committee's Front 3 attacked the outpost, prompting government security
personnel to return fire.
In the 20-minute engagement, a militiaman identified as Rene
Goc-ong was killed.
The Banlag patrol base is supervised by the Army's 25th
Infantry Battalion, Lacambra said.
Meanwhile, authorities said another NPA band put up a road
block in the neighboring town of Montevista
around the same time as the attack in Monkayo.
About 30 NPA members conducted the blockade at Kilometer 104
of the National Highway ,
or Davao-Butuan road, in Barangay Bankerohan Sur, Southern
Mindanao regional police spokesman Superintendent Antonio Rivera
said.
The rebels used a an Isuzu truck and a Starex van to block
the highway, in a bid to stall reinforcing government troopers.
The blockade lasted 30 minutes after which the NPAs quickly
retreated.
