Soldier killed in NPA attack in Davao del Norte town

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 11): Soldier killed in NPA attack in Davao del Norte town

A member of the 60th Infantry Battalion's peace and development team (PDT) was killed during an attack by New People's Army (NPA) fighters in Barangay Gupitan, Kapalong, Davao del Norte Monday morning.

The military reported that troopers from the PDT were conducting peace and development outreach program in the locality when they were fired upon by an undetermined number of rebels at around 5:40 a.m. This resulted in the death of one soldier

Capt. Jose Napoleon Gamos, 60th Infantry Battalion spokesperson, said the rebels positioned themselves at a nearby school and church during the attack, making it difficult for government troopers to retaliate.

The presence of the PDT unit was requested by the tribal leaders from the area, as recently reiterated by Datu Arturo Davao and Kapalong municipal administrator Gaspar Balingao in a press conference last week.

The tribal leaders wished the area to be secured from armed insurgents who continuously posed a threat and intimidated the tribal folks.

No civilian casualties were reported.

Government forces are in pursuit of the retreating rebels.
