“It’s very significant that we can do this drill with the U.S. and India, not only with a view to the Pacific Ocean but also the Indian Ocean, where our sea lanes stretch,” Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force chief during a news conference at Exercise Malabar opening day.
Exercise Malabar was originally a bilateral naval drill between United States and India that started in 1992. Later it was opened to other countries like Japan, Australia and Singapore.

This year Exercise Malabar is a trilateral naval drill between Japan, U.S. and India. Activities include Carrier strike group operations, Maritime patrol and Reconnaissance operations, anti piracy operations and Visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) operations, Search and rescue exercises, helicopter cross-deck landings, Underway replenishment, gunnery and anti-submarine warfare exercises, and Liaison officer exchange and embarkation.

INS Ranvijay (guided missile destroyer), INS Shivalik (stealth frigate) and INS Shakti (fleet tanker) represents India. US sent submarine (SSN), two destroyers, one tanker along with one Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft. From Japan, Two destroyers along with a P3C Orion and a ShinMaywa US-2.

China said, “we hope defence cooperation among relevant countries can be conducive to peace and stability in the region.”
