The United Nations (UN) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) agreed to renew their strong commitment on Child Protection Program of the world body.
The UN representatives through UNICEF in the Philippines and the MILF representatives met last July 9, 2014 at the BDA office in Cotabato City. Primarily, they discussed UNICEF’s child protection program and the new composition of MILF representatives as panel members.
UN representatives present were Patrick Halton, Child Protection Specialist of the UNICEF, Rebecca Pankhurst, UNICEF Chief of Philippine’s Field Office and Shree Nadarajah, UN in-charge on Child Protection Program. On the MILF side were Mr. Edward Guerra, Head of the panel, members are: Abdulkadir M. Abubakar, Ustadz Norul-Am Abdullah, Mike Kulat and Whelma Madato from the Bangsamoro Women Auxiliary Brigade (BWAB-BIAF). Ustadz Mohammad Shuaib Yacob, Executive Director of the Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA) was also present.
As agreed by both panels, BDA will serve as the program secretariat. The program was formulated before but was stopped in 2009. The mandate of the UN-MILF Panels is to monitor the full implementation of the Action Plan and the Supplemental General Order of the MILF Central Committee signed by Sammy Al-Mansur, Chief of Staff of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) and MILF Chairman Al-Haj Murad Ibrahim. The general order of the MILF is centered on the prohibition of recruitment, integration and involvement of children below 18 years old, men and women into its armed forces.
