The Eastern Mindanao Command on Thursday thumbed down the demand of the New People's Army (NPA) to stop military operations in Surigao Del Norte in exchange for the freedom of four police officers who were captured when the rebel group attacked the Alegria Municipal Police Station last July 10.

"There will no let up of operations against those who sow terror acts in the communities. The CPP-NPA's continued violation of the CARHRIHL (Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law) and rule of law, they continue to attack peace-loving people, two days ago they attacked (a) Lumad community in Prosperidad," Eastern Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz III said.

In the attack against the Alegria Municipal Police Station, two rebels were killed while two police officers wounded.

The incident took place 3 p.m. of July 10.

The issuing firefight lasted for 30 minutes and resulted in the overrunning of the police station.

The rebels then carted away an M-14 automatic rifle, four M-16 rifles and one shotgun before escaping towards the direction of Barangays Siringan and Bliss, both of Kitcharao town, Agusan Del Norte. Also captured were the four on duty police officers.

Two rebels were killed in the incident while an AK-47 automatic rifle was recovered by authorities.
