From GMA News (Jun 13): Khair Mundos planned to bomb LRT in 2002—report

Wanted Abu Sayyaf commander nabbed in Parañaque

After a seven-year manhunt, Khair Mundos, a top ranking Abu Sayyaf leader who has a $500,000 bounty on the US Most Wanted list, was arrested by PNP-CIDG agents in Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City on Wednesday, June 11. Mundos is believed to be a financier of the bandit group. GMA News

Arrested Abu Sayyaf commander Khair Mundos funded at least two aborted bombings targeting public places in Metro Manila in 2002, a military intelligence document has said.

Citing an intelligence report from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), an exclusive report by Ian Cruz aired over GMA News TV's “Balitanghali” said Mundos was part of the plot to bomb the LRT Central Station in Manila over a decade ago.

Mundos also funded an attempt to bomb a Cher Transport Bus in October 2002, the report added.

The GMA News TV report further said that Mundos was behind the bombing of a Golden Highway Transit Bus along EDSA on October 18, 2002.  The attack killed two persons.

Police arrested Mundos on Wednesday in Parañaque City. The Abu Sayyaf leader had a P1.2-million bounty for his arrest.

AFP spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala earlier said that Mundos' arrest "will greatly affect the operation of Abu Sayyaf Group in terms of financial sourcing."

Mundos was a security guard and an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) before he became part of the Abu Sayyaf in 1999, the exclusive report said.

As a member of the bandit group, Mundos was also tasked to talk to Arab financiers of an attempt to bomb the US Embassy in Manila in 2001, the report added.
