Governor offers medical treatment to ailing Negros rebel chief

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 18): Governor offers medical treatment to ailing Negros rebel chief

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is offering medical treatment to ailing priest-turned rebel Frank Fernandez, secretary of the New People’s Army Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros.

According to the military, Fernandez, who is also the spokesperson of the National Democratict Front-Negros, is suffering from a kidney ailment.

Fernandez, who is facing murder and rebellion charges, has a P5-million bounty on his head. He is already in his 70s, the military said.

“Should he decide to come down from the mountains, we will help him undergo a kidney transplant,” the governor said.

In the past two years, a total of 114 rebels in Negros Occidental have surrendered and returned to mainstream society.

The rebel returnees and their families have availed financial and livelihood assistance from the provincial government, and several of them are also beneficiaries of the Negros First-Army Wellness Farm program.

Once again, Marañon urged the remaining NPA rebels in the province, including Fernandez, to leave the rebel movement as he reiterated that the number one enemy in Negros Occidental is poverty.

“Let’s help one another to combat poverty, and not (fight) against each other,” the governor said.
