In line with its peace and security missions, the Eastern Mindanao Command on Monday announced that it has recovered 45 AK-47 automatic rifles during recent operations in the region.

Capt. Alberto Caber, Eastern Mindanao Command spokesperson, said that 31 of weapons were recovered during recent clashes with the rebels in CARAGA and Davao Regions while the remaining 14 were surrendered by rebels availing of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Guns for Peace Program.

A year ago, Eastern Mindanao Command head Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier G. Cruz III demanded for an investigation after a series of AK-47 rifle recoveries following several encounters between the soldiers and New People's Army (NPA) fighters.

“We coordinated with the Philippine National Police- Firearms and Explosive Division to trace the source of these AK-47 rifles," he stressed.

Last Sunday, soldiers from the 30th Infantry Battalion recovered an additional four AK-47 automatic rifles; two hand grenades; four improvised explosive device; 15 magazines for AK-47 with ammunition; a rifle grenade; a hand held radio, six bandoleers; and six backpacks from the members of the extortion unit of the NPA after a 20-minute firefight in Barangay Cambuayon, Bacuag, Surigao Del Norte.

The residents provided the information to the 30IB on the harassment and extortion activities made by the NPAs in the area.
