The military has called for volunteers to assist in the repacking of relief goods for the victims of typhoon Yolanda in Eastern, Central and Western Visayas.

Major Jacob Thaddeus Obligado, commanding officer of the 10th Civil-Military Operations Battalion said the government has set up two collection points for relief assistance at the gymnasium of the GSIS in Matina run by the Archdiocese of Davao and the depot of the Department of Public Works and Highways-XI in Barangay Panacan, serving as inter-agency relief assistance center.

He said 42 organizations have already promised to participate in the repacking but helping hands are still much needed.

“Several organizations have already pledged cash, goods, equipment, trucks and even ships and aircraft, with the DSWD setting the schedule of convoys bound for Tacloban,” Obligado said.

He said communities who want to volunteer may approach the nearest police stations that will ferry them to the nearest packing stations.

Obligado said that the region’s experience on typhoon Pablo has been made by United Nations organizations as a pattern to respond to the areas ravaged by typhoon Yolanda.

He also urged the residents to also donate nails to expedite the construction of much needed shelters for the affected families.

On Saturday, the Eastern Mindanao Command sent 350 soldiers from the 4th ID, 10th ID, Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao and Army Engineering units to respond to calls for reconstruction and rehabilitation in Tacloban City.

The troops brought along with them a solar powered lighting system that can be used to charge cellular phones and other devices and even energize the community where soldiers are deployed.
