A member of the Philippine Army has been wounded following an armed skirmish with several members of the New People's Army (NPA) early Monday night at the boundary of Barangays Nawayan and Tacayan in Tapaz, Capiz.

Major Ray Tiongson, spokesman of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division, said the encounter has wounded Private First Class Ricky Llorico but he was declared in safe condition after he was immediately treated for a bullet that scraped his left foot.

Tiongson said the government forces was having an internal security patrol operation after they received an information from concerned residents on the presence of armed rebel group in the said barangays.

The insurgents fired upon the patrolling government troops after which a brief firefight between the two groups erupted that wounded PFC Llorico in the process.

The military said several of the rebels were believed wounded as traces of bloodstains were found by pursuing government troops in the scene of the encounter.

The army soldiers immediately conducted hot pursuit against the fleeing rebels who retreated deeper into the mountains of Tapaz.
