SULTAN KUDARAT, Maguindanao – Police have launched a manhunt against two men on a motorbike, who shot dead an off duty police officer Sunday in Barangay Gang here.

Major Julhamin Asdani, Sultan Kudarat town police chief, said a police tracking team is following a lead that is vital to the identification of the suspects in the murder of Patrolman Asraph Pasandalan Mato.

Mato, 30, was a member of Regional Mobile Force Battalion in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RMFB-BARMM) and a resident of Barangay Semba, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.

Asdani said the victim was driving his motorbike at past 1 p.m. Sunday along the national highway in Barangay Gang, Sultan Kudarat when gunmen also on a motorbike shot him from behind.

“Mato fell off from his bike and died on the spot while the suspects sped away,” Asdani said.

The ambush occurred in front of many people as a “kalilang” (wedding celebration) was ongoing near the highway.

Asdani declined to comment further on the case pending the ongoing police follow-up operation.
