The Philippine Army in Caraga Region has underscored the role of the youth sector in the continuing fight against insurgency and terrorism.
Maj. Francisco P. Garello, civil-military operations officer of the 402nd Infantry (Stringers) Brigade based in this city, said the support of the young people "will widen the ongoing information drive of the government, its agencies, and the armed forces against the deception being hurled" by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA).
“The support of the youth sector is very important to counter the recruitments being done by the CPP-NPA and the manipulation they spread to communities,” Garello said in a phone interview with the Philippine News Agency on Monday (October 7).
Garello said the Army, in coordination with the local government units (LGUs) in the region, has forged various partnerships to empower the youth sector in the area.
“We have started some major activity on this partnership such as the holding of Leadership Development Training (LDT) for our Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) leaders,” the Army official said.
He said the first LDT training was held Friday last week in Jamboree Site, Barangay Alubihid, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte that was participated by SK presidents from different barangays of Butuan City.
In an earlier statement sent to the media, Garello said the training aims “to empower the youth, enhance the leadership and community organizing skills, and instill awareness on the nature of the CPP-NPA-NDF and its deceptive infiltration strategy to the youth sector.”
Among those who graced the training include Butuan City Councilor Cromwel Nortega who represented Mayor Ronnie Vicente Lagnada; Col. Cerilo C. Balaoro, Jr., deputy commander of the 402nd Brigade; Butuan City SK Federation President Wen Kok Chiang II; and representatives from the Army's 23rd and 29th Infantry Battalions.
During the training, Chiang urged the youth leaders to support the peace and development initiatives of the Army.
The local government of Butuan, through Nortega, recognized the significance of the training that served as a venue for SK leaders to show their potentials and knowledge as community leaders.
Balaoro also provided the youth leaders with information on the infiltration being done by the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in communities, particularly to those considered as vulnerable sectors such as the youth and the Indigenous Peoples.
“The CTG targets those sectors that are vulnerable and with issues they can exploit and use to agitate the masses. With this training, we aim to inform the participants on the true nature of the CTG and the youths' role to contribute to the community peace-building,” Balaoro said.
