A man who claimed to be a member of the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) surrendered to military authorities in Lanao del Sur along with five supporters of the extremist group.
Col. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade commander, identified the surrenderer as Pacalinog Bantogaranao, 32, who also claimed he was involved in the five-month Marawi siege.
Cuerpo said Bantogaranao turned over one M-16 Armalite rifle, one KG9 sub machine gun, magazines and ammunition.
Bantogaranao was a follower of DI sub-leader Madie Maute, who was killed during the first week of the five-month gun battle between the DI -- then known as the Maute group -- and government forces, he added.
Cuerpo identified the five supporters of the DI who surrendered as Monib Padati, Batalo Hajicaya, Tokiin Cuaro, Micky Hajicaya and Mobarak Hajicaya.
Cuerpo said they surrendered to the Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion around 9:30 a.m. Monday in Lumba Bayabao, Lanao del Sur.
“The surrender of the DI-Maute fighter and supporters were attributed to the active support on mediation and peace negotiation of local government unit heads and peace-loving locals in our area of responsibility,” he said citing they surrendered through the efforts of Lumba Bayabao Mayor Mahar Dagalangit.
“We are glad that they decided to live back to their normal lives, not hiding and running in the mountains and contribute by becoming productive citizens in their communities,” he added.
Maj. Gen. Roberto Ancan, Army’s 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan (the Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces) commander, commended the efforts of the troops and the local government officials of Lumba Bayabao for the successful surrender.
“We encourage other fighters and supporters to surrender and lay down their arms so that their younger generations and communities will not suffer from their senseless demise,” Ancan added.
