Suspected New People's Army rebels on Monday attacked two detachments of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit in Abra province.
The NPAs attacked a detachment at Barangay Labaan in Bucloc town in Abra, GMA Ilocos reported on Tuesday.
A second group attacked another detachment in Barangay Maguyepyep in Sallapadan town, the report added.
No one was reported injured in the resulting exchange of gunfire, the report said.
The Philippine Army said the NPA attack could be related to its upcoming anniversary on March 29.
"Ipinakita nila ito sa mga civilian para sa ganon makakuha sila ng suporta kasi ngayon medyo nawawala na ang suporta at tiwala ng mga civilian sa kanila," said Col. Edmund Tubiera, commanding officer of the Army's 50th Infantry Battalion.
