From the Daily Zamboanga Times (Jul 6): Marine dead, 6 others hurt in Sulu road bomb attack

A marine sergeant  was killed, while six  others were wounded in roadside bomb attack carried out by Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in Barangay Taung, Patikul, Sulu yesterday morning.
 
A police intelligence officer from Jolo island who requested anonymity as he was not authorized to talk on the attack disclosed that one platoon of marines were aboard an M-35 truck on their way to pick up firewood when an improvided explosive device went off hitting the vehicle at Barangay Taung around 7:30 a.m.
 
The intelligence officer said the seven soldiers belong to the Headquarter Service Company 1st Marines Company.
 
Killed was Sgt. Mel and wounded in action were Sgt. Senoses, PFC Bait, PFC Rendon, PFC Conones, PFC Cacho and PFC Patangan.
 
Military forces were immediatly sent for a hot pursuit operation.
 
This developed as the military denounced what it described as a treacherous killing using a landmine or IED which is banned  under international laws.
 
The six wounded soldiers were airlifted to the Western Mindanao Command Hospital in Zamboanga City for treatment.
