From the Philippine Star (Oct 24): 14 NPA rebels, 5 soldiers dead in Mindanao clashes

A total of 19 communist rebels and soldiers were slain in separate encounters in Northern Mindanao during the third quarter and the latter part of this month, the Army said. Lt. Col. Eugenio Osias IV, spokesman of the Army’s 4th division, said a total of 14 communist rebels were killed in 33 armed clashes during the period. “Unfortunately, these successes also caused the sacrifices of your soldiers. For the period, five soldiers were killed-in-action and 14 were wounded, but no government equipment was lost during the combat engagements,” he said. Osias said 12 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered and six others were nabbed in the third quarter. “The government also gained seven high-powered and seven low-powered firearms out of these encounters and discovered or cleared 12 enemy encampments,” he said. The 4th division secures Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis provinces and the entire Caraga region, including Surigao, where several mining firms are based....
