CEBU CITY – An anti-communist group advocating nationalism and democracy on Friday marched on the streets here and burned an effigy of Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison to signify their condemnation of atrocities committed by the New People’s Army (NPA) in time for the celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Former Alliance for Nationalism and Democracy (ANAD) party-list representative, now Cebu City Councilor Pastor “Jun” Alcover Jr., led the group known as Sugbo Kontra Komunista (SUKO) in the protest march which they called the “people’s rally”.
At 7 a.m., the protesters gathered at the Fuente Osmeña Circle in the downtown area, and then marched down to Colon Street where they held a short program.
Before ending the activity, the group burned an effigy of Sison, former Bayan Muna party-list representative Satur Ocampo and the NPA flag, while shouting "Mabuhay ang demokrasya!" (Long live democracy!) and praising the country's police and the military.
In his message, Alcover said the Filipino people are not happy with communists' atrocities in the country.
“Ang atoang tumong niini mao ang pasupak sa duguon ug kademonyohan sa NPA nga nagsaulog sa ilang ika-50 nga anibersaryo (Our purpose of this rally is to oppose the bloody and evil deeds of the NPA which celebrates its 50th anniversary),” Alcover told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview.
He said the Filipino people should condemn the 50 years of killings by the communist group which, he said, have affected the country’s socio-economic growth.
“Their barbaric and terroristic acts for the last 50 years practically destroyed our economy,” he added. “We want to put an end to the harassment, ambush, liquidation, and killing that does not give any good to the Filipino people.”
When asked why they burned an effigy of Sison, Alcover said their group considers him as the “real executioner” responsible for the death of government soldiers and innocent civilians.
“Joma (Sison) is the real criminal kay siya maoy nangulo, siyay nagsugo sa mga armadong grupong NPA nga mopatay para maangkon gyud nila ang ilang gusto nga bag-ong sistema (because he is the leader who ordered its armed group, NPA, in carrying out killing to advance their objective of a new system),” he said.
He vowed to conduct more anti-communist rallies.
The European Union and United States have declared the CPP-NPA a terrorist organization.
