Army troops seized combat equipment and documents left by the New People's Army (NPA) following an armed encounter in Davao del Sur town of Sta. Cruz on Christmas Day.
Lt. Col. Rhojun Rosales, commander of the Army's 39th Infantry Battalion, said the clash ensued while government troops were headed to a remote area in Barangay Sibulan to verify a civilian tip indicating the presence of NPA rebels.
Rosales said the rebels fired on troops first but scampered away shortly, leaving some combat equipment and documents.
It was believed that the NPA members were preparing for the Communist Party of the Philippines' (CPP) 50th anniversary as shown by the presence of makeshift shanties at the encounter site.
“The battalion is on high alert to thwart any offensive atrocities that the terrorists are planning to conduct as a despicable testimony of their existence," Rosales said in a text message on Wednesday.
"We are keeping the pressure high for them to surrender and live peacefully with their loved ones especially this Christmas Day," he added.
