Mail bombs may also be used by terrorists in the country, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) warned Thursday.
"Possible yun. Kasi yung tinatawag nating 'letter bomb' has been… Based on my studies on terrorism, has been there maybe 10 years ago pa. Ginagamit na nila yun," AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Carlito Galvez said in a Malacañang press briefing.
He made this statement following reports in the U.S. that explosive devices were mailed to former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and to the building housing CNN's offices in New York.
Galvez called for vigilance, directing all concerned government agencies to be alert for similar attacks.
"We have to be vigilant, really be very vigilant especially the different agencies like the Postmaster General, and also yung sa ating Customs, sa BI (Bureau of Immigration), etc." Galvez said.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the incident in the U.S. should be an "eye-opener" for the Philippines.
"Lalo na sa atin na medyo, unang una, we lack the technology… Wala pa siguro tayong mga technical equipment para tingnan yung sulat na yon," PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde told reporters on Thursday.
Some believe U.S. President Donald Trump's public tirades against Democrats and the media may be promoting hate toward these subjects.
Despite this development, Malacañang said President Rodrigo Duterte, who is also known for his tough talk against critics and human rights advocates, will not change his ways.
"For one, he's been in office for the last two years and we have not known of any incident similar to what is happening in the States," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a press briefing. "I think the President will never change his style."
