From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 28): 2 Army detachments foil BIFF attack in N. Cotabato
Suspected Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) tried to over-run two Army and militia detachments in North Cotabato after government forces, although outnumbered, defended their posts early on Sunday dawn.
Supt. Romeo Galgo Jr., speaking for police in SOCCSKSARGEN region, said undetermined number of BIFF members attacked a detachment of 7th Infantry Battalion situated along the national highway in Barangay Nalapaan, Pikit at about 12:45 a.m.
Although outnumbered, the soldiers and Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) returned fire that forced the attackers to flee. No casualty was reported on government forces.
Galgo could not say if the attackers also suffered casualty.
At about 4 a.m., the same group, using rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles, harassed an Army base in Barangay Pagangan, Aleosan, also in North Cotabato.
A 30-minute fire fight ensued.
The two detachments are three kilometers apart.
Galgo said the North Cotabato portion of the national highway linking Cotabato City and Davao is now open after the military cleared the area.
