FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – A distinguished Army senior officer who played a key role in promoting peace, reconciliation and development in Central Mindanao leads this year’s awardees for the Philippine Army’s 119th founding anniversary celebration.



Maj. Gen. Edmundo R Pangilinan, the Commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, received the Gawad sa Kapayapaan award for his significant contributions to internal peace and security, and for supporting the government’s peace initiatives in Central Mindanao.

A total of 24 Army personnel and civilians were recognized during the anniversary celebration.

Joining Maj. Gen. Pangilinan were Col Juvymax R Uy who was conferred with the Philippine Legion of Honor (Degree of Legionnaire) for his services as Group Commander of the Army’s Intelligence and Security Group; and Col Francisco D Millare, Commanding Officer of the 77th Infantry Battalion, who was given the Outstanding Achievement Medal.

The Distinguished Conduct Star was given to 1LT Dionizer Mark O Delos Santos, the then platoon leader of the 41st Infantry Battalion, 5th Infantry Division.

Lt. Col. Rosendo C Abad Jr. received the Distinguished Service Star for his services as the then Group Commander of the 6th Special Forces Company, Special Forces Regiment (Airborne), Special Operations Command.

The Gold Cross Medal was awarded to 2LT Franz Arvin R Balmaceda of the 73rd Infantry Battalion, 10th Infantry Division and Cpl Cliforduin O Bade of the 8th Scout Ranger Battalion, First Scout Ranger Regiment, Special Operations Command.

Other awardees include Lt. Col. Wilfredo B Manalang, who received the Military Achievement Medal; Col Cirilito E Sobejana, receiving the Gawad sa Kaunlaran; PFC Leonel G Torrel, who was awarded with the Bronze Cross Medal; Sgt Victorio M Ang, receiving the Military Merit Medal; CAFGU Active Auxiliary Gregorio P Laginan, who received Kagitingan sa Barangay (Maginoo) award; PFC Erenio S Besonia Jr., the Philippine Army Enlisted Personnel of the Year; CAA Sandy P Sentelices, the Philippine Army CAFGU Active Auxiliary of the Year; Ms Nelda V Maghanoy, Philippine Army Model Supervisor of the Year; Ms Virginia H De Luna, Philippine Army Model Employee of the Year; 1LT Abdul K Dumpao, Philippine Army Best Reservist of the Year; Cadet First Class Jestoni R Kimpalong, Philippine Army Best ROTC Male Cadet of the Year; and Cadet First Class Jenny Joy V Tindaan, Philippine Army Best ROTC Female Cadet of the Year.

A Command Plaque was given to the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental,
Sigma Alpha Sorority – UP Los Baños Chapter, SPO3 Ezrael D Lantingan of the Alabel Municipal Police Station in Sarangani Province, Atty. Angelito W Chua of the PAG-IBIG Fund, and Mr. Edwin Mateo Caliolio of the Southern City Colleges in Zamboanga City.

Meanwhile, for his part, Army chief Lt. Gen. Eduardo Ano said the Philippine Army continues to develop its capability building and, in the next few years, would eventually transform into a world-class Army.

Ano reported the Army had issued to the troops a total of 56,843 modern M4 rifles as replacement for the Vietnam war-era M16.

He said a total of 144 refurbished armored vehicles, including six armored vehicles equipped with remote controlled weapon systems, have been commissioned, along with 60 field ambulance units and 300 light utility vehicles.

Other capability upgrades include the more that 2,000 units of radio and communication equipment for more effective command and control.

“We’re also expecting the delivery of more infantry fighting and fire support vehicles, 155 millimeter howitzers, light utility vehicles, 60-millimeter mortars, 40-millimeter grenade launchers, rocket launcher units and 50-watt armored vehicle configuration radios,” Ano said.
