Malacanang on Sunday said the government peace table will
remain open for the Communist Party of the Philippines-National People’s
Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) amid reports saying the number of
communist rebels continue to diminish under the administration of President
Benigno Aquino III.
”The peace table of the Office of the Presidential Adviser
on the Peace Process for the CPP-NPA-NDF will remain open in line with the
government’s commitment to have a meaning process that would result to an
agreement,” Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary
Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a Radyo ng Bayan interview.
Coloma, however, said the military operations will continue
to prevent the NPA rebels from sowing violence against the people and to ensure
security and peace in the communities.
”In line with this, the government will continue to
implement programs that will address poverty and lack of opportunity that have
become the root cause of insurgency in our country,” Coloma said.
”Like with the President said in his previous interviews,
the opening of the peace talks relies in their (NPA) willingness to join again
the process and return to peace negotiation,” he added.
According to the AFP, the number of NPA rebels continue to
drop in some areas of the country, particularly in the Southern Tagalog region.
