AFP junks reports of ISIS branch, province in Mindanao

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 11): AFP junks reports of ISIS branch, province in Mindanao

While exercising all possible means to deter the spread of Islamic State in Syria and Iraq extremist idealogy in the country, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday dismisses reports that an ISIS branch or province already exists in Mindanao.

"There are no ISIS members in the Philippines. What we have here is ISIS-ISISAN (ISIS wannabes)," AFP public affairs office chief Col. Noel Detoyato said.

The official issued this statement on wake of another video showing Abu Sayyaf Group sub-commander Isnilon Hapilon and other bandit leaders pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

He added these videos are nothing but propaganda aimed at recruiting new members for the bandits.

"There is a difference between ISIS directed and ISIS inspired," Detoyato stressed, adding that violence actions conducted by these individuals against civilian and military targets are not ordered by the international terrorist group.

And in the same vein, the military official said all ISIS wannabes in the Philippines are being constantly monitored by the AFP.
