Truck driver hurt in Basilan strafing incident

From ABS-CBN (Dec 8): Truck driver hurt in Basilan strafing incident
At least one person was injured when unidentified armed men strafed a cargo truck carrying 20 construction workers in Lamitan, Basilan past 10 a.m. Monday. Lamitan police chief Senior Inspector Gean Gallardo identified the wounded victim as Koyong Jamalul, the driver of the truck owned by 2-M Construction Company. Jamalul sustained a gunshot wound.

Gallardo said the truck was en route to Albarka town coming from Lamitan when it was attacked by armed men along a road in Barangay Baas.

Despite his injury, Jamalul was still able to drive the truck to a nearby military detachment to ask for assistance.

He was brought to the Lamitan Hospital and later transferred to another hospital in Zamboanga City.
The other construction workers were unscathed.

Gallardo said this is the second time that armed men attacked the workers of 2-M Construction Company. The first incident took place more than a week ago in Lamitan.

No one was hurt in said incident, although the truck was hit by bullets.

In September 14 this year, nine workers of Mace Construction Company were abducted by suspected members of Abu Sayyaf Group in the village of Benembengan in Sumisip.

Two of the nine workers were able to escape and report the incident to the police and military units.

The seven construction workers were later released with the help of local officials of Sumisip and ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman.

Police said the Abu Sayyaf Group has been targeting construction firms operating in Basilan to delay or to stop the implementation of government-initiated projects in the province.
