Two soldiers from the 25th Infantry Battalion were killed
while another one was seriously wounded during an encounter with about 60
heavily-armed New People's Army (NPA) bandits in Sitio Kalinugan, Barangay
Casoon, Monkayo, Compostela Valley province on Saturday afternoon.
Capt. Rhyan Batchar, 10th Infantry Division public affairs
office chief, said the encounter stemmed from their efforts to recover two
soldiers abducted by the NPAs last Sept. 30.
The rebels encountered by the troops were the combined elements
of Section Committee 3 and Pulang Bagani Command 4 of the Southern Mindanao
Regional Committee led by Zaldy Cañete, alias "Jinggoy," Batchar
said.
Killed-in-action were Cpl. Byron Moreno and Pfc. Thon Katog,
whose bodies were already claimed by their families.
The wounded trooper, identified only as Pfc. Castillanes, is
now undergoing treatment at the Davao Regional Hospital
in Tagum City .
After the 25-minute firefight, the soldiers recovered an
improvised explosive device, electrical wires and several personal belongings
of the NPAs who scampered to different directions.
Soldiers from the 1001st Infantry Brigade are pursuing the
fleeing rebels.
