Palace to China: Take responsibility and answer for impact of reclamation work in West Philippine Sea

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 2): Palace to China: Take responsibility and answer for impact of reclamation work in West Philippine Sea

Malacanang urged China Thursday to take responsibility and answer for the impact of its reclamation activities in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) in line with its agreement with other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members to maintain the existing features of the sea.

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. stressed that the growing world public opinion against China’s reclamation activities is an indication of the truth believed by many countries and individuals in the global community.

Coloma said the Philippines’ position on the South China Sea dispute has gained support not just from neighboring countries but also from Group of 7 (G7) and the European community.

Coloma said China should be responsible for that it declared under the “Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea”, an agreement it signed with other ASEAN members in 2002 indicating the need to maintain the existing features of the sea.

He noted that China’s reclamation activities clearly violate its own declaration under the 2002 agreement.
