Eastern Mindanao Command troops are now tracking down the 20
or so New People's Army (NPA) bandits that snatched two rebel returnees who
were fishing at the Libang River, Barangay Tagbalili, Esperanza town, Agusan
Del Sur on the afternoon of April 12.
This was revealed by Col. Romeo Brawner, EMC spokesperson,
in a statement Thursday.
He added that the incident took place at 4 p.m. Brawner
identified the victims as Oto Manlayan and Sanchez Manlayan.
Brawner said that the two were fishing when snatched by 20
NPA bandits led by one Randy Mantigmoan.
After taking the two at gunpoint, the rebels fled towards
the direction of Barangay Calabuan.
26th Infantry Battalion commanding officer Lt. Col. Rolando
Dumawa said that they are already coordinating with the local government unit,
the PNP and Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) for
possible courses of action to prevent this from happening again in the future.
"The victims were NPA returnees and started their
normal life with their families since 2004. We condemn the NPA bandits for
preventing our lost brothers from becoming productive citizens of our country
again. We are also thankful to the villagers who are providing us information
about the identities of NPA kidnappers," he added.
NPA returnees are provided with financial and livelihood
assistance program including livelihood training package through the OPAPP and
LGUs as a part of the government's program for NPA returnees.
