From the Mindanao Times (Dec 10): Two NPAs yield in Misamis
TWO NPA rebels turned over their firearms to elements of the 58th Infantry Battalion in Claveria, Misamis Oriental on Monday. The soldiers could not reveal their names but claimed that both are operating in Claveria town. They brought with them one M4 carbine and one M1 carbine, respectively.
Accordingly, the two surrendered due to differences in policies and in-fighting among the cadres, especially on the conduct of tactical offensives, as well as the hardship of being away from their families.
Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad, commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command, observed the rising number of surrenderees since October this year.
“We have noticed the increase of NPAs surrendering with firearms since October this year with November posting as the highest with 10 firearms, the 46 surrenderees we accounted since October yielded a total of 22 firearms or a ratio of one out of two surrenderees surrendered firearm,” Baladad said.
The surrenderees will likely receive remuneration of P75,000 and P20,000 for the rifles. The former NPA rebels will also be enrolled in the Misamis Oriental Integration Program,
Baladad repeated his offer to the NPAs to lay down their arms and live a peaceful life and avail of the livelihood program and other assistance offered by the government.
“We are again calling on our brothers who are continuously deceived by the communist propaganda to lay down their arms. We ensure you that we will work with other stakeholders for you to start a new life and join your family in the mainstream society,” Baladad said.
