This appears to be a CPP front group-sponsored protest action. KMP-SMR (Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas-Southern Mindanao Region is a CPP peasant front. KMP is a founding member of the main CPP multisectoral umbrella group BAYAN (Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-New Patriotic Alliance). The protest is an example of how CPP front organizations organize local peasants to conduct demonstrations against the Philippine military in an attempt to exert pressure on government officials to remove military units from NPA influenced or contested areas.
