From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 12): Pursuing Army troops in Surigao del Sur ambushed, 5 soldiers hurt

Five soldiers were wounded when the troops conducting hot pursuit operations were ambushed by undetermined number of New People's Army (NPA) rebels on Wednesday morning in San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, according to police reports.

Reports from Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office reaching the regional police headquarters here Thursday morning stated that a platoon of the 36th Infantry Army Battalion led by 2Lt. Marian Victor Mancia was pursuing the NPA members which was encountered earlier by the troopers of 1st Platoon of the same battalion on Tuesday afternoon, when ambushed at the vicinity of Barangay Siagao, San Miguel around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The ensuing firefight which had lasted for about 10 minutes resulted to the wounding of five Army soldiers identified as Cpl. Saham S. Baginda, Pfc. Wilmer B. Martinez, Pfc. Louie M. Baldivino, who all sustained sharpnel wounds from landmines on their bodies; Pfc. Renan Villarino, who was also hit by a landmine at the leg, and Pfc. Tagbe who sustained a gunshot wound at his leg.

San Miguel PNP is now conducting an investigation.
