‘Car Bomb’ TKO’d by ‘Low Bat’

From Malaya (Apr 26): ‘Car Bomb’ TKO’d by ‘Low Bat’

THE Laguna Police Provincial Office is readying charges of illegal possession of explosives against three Indians after an improvised explosive device that could be detonated by a cellphone was found attached to the engine of their vehicle Wednesday morning.

But the IED could not be set off as the cellphone battery was already drained.

The IED was discovered by a mechanic at the Toyota branch along the Maharlika highway in Barangay San Benito, Alaminos town in Laguna, where Narinder Singh, Rajeth Kumaar, and Jasbir Singh, all from Sta. Cruz in Laguna, left their Toyota Avanza van for an oil change at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The IED was defused by the local police.

The IED was made up of a cellphone, 9-volt battery, electrical blasting cap, metal sheet box, and C4 as its main charge, Chief Supt. Benito Estipona, regional police director of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), said yesterday.

Estipona said the Indians could not explain how the bomb got into the vehicle. They also told investigators they have not used the vehicle which they said had been parked for three days in front of their house.

“We will file the charges against them kasi it is their vehicle and they could not explain how the bomb got there. They should be responsible for their vehicle,” he said.
