The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) condemns in the strongest terms possible the killing yesterday evening of Cristina Morales Jose, a community leader and one of the officers of the organization of Pablo victims.

She was shot by motorcycle-riding assassins yesterday at 6 p.m. at Baganga, Davao Oriental, after attending a meeting of the barangay council. Jose served as a councilor of Barangay Binondo, Baganga.

“Jose’s murder could only have been committed by the criminal elements attached to the 67th IB,” said the CPP. Earlier, she issued reports of harassments by barangay officials and military elements against her and other victims who actively participated in the protest actions last week in Davao.

“This is clearly an act to intimidate the victims of the calamity who have been vocal and resolute in exposing the ineptness of the Aquino regime and its social welfare department in addressing the grave socio-economic and humanitarian issues being faced by the victims of the recent calamities in Davao Oriental and other parts of Mindanao,” said the CPP.

“The killing of Jose comes a day after Aquino’s social welfare secretary Dinky Soliman announced that criminal charges will be filed against the leaders of Barug Katawhan, a group of calamity victims, who organized the protest actions last week outside the office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Davao City,” pointed out the CPP.

“Soliman’s actions violate the agreement forged between the DSWD officials and the calamity victims that no acts of reprisal will be taken against the demonstrators who took part in the mass actions last week.”

“Soliman and her Malacañang bosses have been all riled up over the actions of the Pablo victims since January and exposés of corruption and government ineptness,” said the CPP. “They have exhibited extreme intolerance against the victims of the Pablo calamity and have gone the extreme route of insinuating that their actions are instigated by ‘leftist agitators’ in the vain attempt to cover up the failings of the Aquino regime.”

“By issuing such statements, Soliman herself, cannot escape culpability for provoking the militarist zealots to take action against the calamity victims and their leaders, including Jose,” said the CPP.
