NSFA, Panacan, Davao City – Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) troops under the supervision of LtGen. Greg T. Almerol together with other security forces captured two communist terrorists while another surrendered on separate incidents.

The joint forces of EastMinCom’s 10th Infantry Division (10th ID), 701st Brigade (701st Bde), 66th Infantry Battalion (66th IB), 48th IB, Philippine Air Force (PAF), Philippine National Police (PNP), and Intelligence units captured Ronnie Calibay alias Lito and Jimmy Samonte alias Jim, both members of Guerrilla Front 18, Sub-Regional Committee 2, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (GF18, SRC2, SMRC) and seized their M16 rifle with attached grenade launcher during the launched of joint intelligence operation at Sitio Banhawan, Barangay Marayag, Lupon, Davao Oriental on December 2, 2021.

On a separate incident, a communist terrorist identified as Ongiles Landahay, member of Squad Primera, Platoon Andoy, Sub-Regional Guerilla Unit, Sub-Regional Committee 5, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SRGU, SRC5, SMRC) surrendered and endorsed his M16 rifle to the troops of 1003rd Brigade’s 56th IB and 89th IB in Talaingod, Davao Del Norte.

Meanwhile, another joint intelligence operation conducted by the troops of 10th ID, 701st Bde, PAF, PNP, and Intel units also recovered several firearms composed of an M14, M16, and Bushmaster rifles from the CTG, after former rebels who previously surrendered to the troops disclosed the location of arms cache at Sitio Magkilo, Barangay Marayag, Lupon, Davao Oriental on December 3, 2021.

Apart from that, a caliber 50 sniper rifle with 25 rounds of ammunition, and subversive document that has high intelligence value was recovered by the combined troops of 701st Bde, 67th IB, 48th IB, Intel units and PNP on the same day at Sitio 1K, Brgy Bunawan Brook, Bunawan, Agusan del Sur.

An anti-personnel mine (APM) was also recovered in Sitio Bagong Silang, Brgy Bayugan 3, Rosario of the same province, after troops acted upon the revelation of former rebels, which led to the recovery of high-powered firearms and other war materials.

LtGen. Greg T. Almerol, Commander of EastMinCom, attributed these accomplishments to the culture of cooperation fostered by the joint AFP, PNP and former rebels who have shared a bulk of information that is crucial to the success of the military’s operations.

The EastMinCom Commander also welcomed the peaceful surrender of one of the communist terrorists and called upon the remaining CTG leaders and members to “emulate the example of those who have already chosen the path of peace by embracing the government’s sincere offer.”

“This Christmas season is the best time to surrender so that you can be reunited with your loved ones without having to worry about your condition. Do not wait for another year to pass without changing the course of your life. I urge you to make your peaceful surrender as your New Year’s resolution,” LtGen. Almerol said, addressing the remaining communist terrorists who remain to resist government forces.

The EastMinCom Commander, however, stressed that his troops will not hesitate to use force if the communist terrorists continue to resort to violent means, adding that it is the soldiers’ responsibility to protect the ordinary Filipinos first before anything else.

LtGen. Almerol reiterated that he would rather that the remaining CTG members embrace the government’s offer through a peaceful means so that they can also benefit from its programs through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
