Posted to Kalinaw News (Jul 24, 2020): NPA medic surrenders, yields firearm in Davao de Oro (By TASK FORCE BALIK LOOB)

MAWAB, Davao de Oro —A New People’s Army (NPA) medic sought the help of the local government to return to the folds of the law last July 20, at the Davao de Oro Governor’s office.

“Andam ko og ang provincial government sa Davao de Oro nga mutabang sa mga sumasama nimo nga nahisalaag. Subay lang unya ta sa proseso,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sonny Gonzales, Battalion Commander of the 71st Infantry Battalion (71IB).

(The provincial government of Davao de Oro and I are ready to help those who were deceived by the NPA and have decided to return to the folds of the law. Just undergo the process.)

The former rebel, identified as Daryo, surrendered his 5.56 mm Galil loaded with a magazine of live ammos to the 71IB.

“Kapoy na kaayo, Sir, gutom pa gyud kaayos wala na mi tarong kaon sa taas,” said Daryo. (It was tiresome, Sir. We were starving. We lacked food.)

“Mahimut-anon ako nga naka-amgo ka na nga walay maayong padulngan ang imong pag-apil sa teroristang NPA,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sonny Gonzales. (I am finally happy that you realized that being with the NPA will lead you nowhere.)

The 31-year old Daryo served as a squad medic for the weakened Guerrilla Front Two Sub-Regional Committee 2, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee. He was a resident of Brgy Tibal-Og, Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte before becoming a full-time NPA.

Daryo immediately took his chance to escape the NPA terrorist group when he was allowed to take a bath alone in a forested stream. He went to the office of the Governor of Davao de Oro to formally turn over himself and his firearm as a symbol of his heartfelt return to the government.
Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict Through Peaceful Means

The 71IB continues its relentless effort to maintain the better peace and order in the municipalities of Mawab, Maco, Mabini, Pantukan, and four barangays of Nabunturan of Davao de Oro and Tagum City of Davao del Norte.

“As we continue to intensify our military operations to finally end local armed conflict, we still welcome and assist rebels who choose to lay down their arms and live a normal and peaceful life, ” said Lt. Col. Gonzales as he pointed out that it is rather better to resolve armed conflict by peaceful means.

“Fortunate are those who summoned their courage in laying down their arms and surrendering to the law as in the case of Daryo. He will now live a peaceful life that is free from worries of being busted by authorities,” he added.

Daryo is currently in the custody of the 71IB for custodial briefing as he awaits his enrollment to Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, Daryo

The 71IB, in coordination with Provincial Task Force End Local Communist Armed Conflict), recently facilitated the distribution of financial and livelihood assistance for 16 former rebels.
