CAMP SANG-AN, Labangan, ZDS – The United Nations Habitat Foundation partnered with the Philippine Army’s 55th Engineering Brigade for a housing project intended for the Marawi Siege Internally Displaced families Thursday, July 23, 2020.

Thru a Project Partnership Agreement among the Local Government Units, Non-Government Organizations, Civil Society Organizations, the Army Engineers is set to build 50 out of the 250 permanent shelters in the housing site located in Brgy Kilala, Marawi City.

According to Mr. Warren Ubongen, Project Manager of UN Habitat, “The rebuilding will take time and sacrifices that is why we partner with Philippine Army, Government Agencies, Home Owners Association and Civil Society Organizations in order to accomplish this task”

He also added that the Japan Government funded the housing project which has a goal of not just rebuilding Marawi but to contribute into the peace-building project.

Mr. Janodin Lao, President of the An Nusrat Home Owners Association Inc., expressed his delight with the partnership of the Philippine Army and thanked the involved sponsors and stakeholders in helping them build the community they’ve longed for.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Commander of the Western Mindanao Command and one of the Guest Speaker, stressed the importance of convergence in completing and accomplishing the project.

“If we have unit that destroys, due to compelling reasons or imminent threats, we also have a unit that builds, they are the Army Engineers”, said Lt. Gen. Sobejana.

“If all the agencies of the government and local government units will take part in doing their respective functions, we will leave no gaps and address that is needed to be addressed”, he added.

The activity was also graced with the presence of Maj. Gen. Gene Ponio, 1st Infantry Division Commander; Brig. Gen. Facundo Palafox IV, 2nd Mech Bde Commander; Brig. Gen. Nestor Abando, 55th Engineer Brigade Commander and Col. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, 103rd Infantry Brigade Commander.

Civilian guest present were Mayor Majul Gandamra of Marawi City; Sultan Nasser Sampaco, Chaiperson of Marawi Sultanate League; and ASec Felix Castro Jr., Field Manager, TF Bangon Marawi.
