CAMP SANG-AN, Labangan, ZDS – Four members of Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) local terrorist group surrendered to Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion, Thursday, July 23, 2020.

The firearms yielded consists of one m653 carbine rifle, two 40mm grenade launcher and two .45 cal pistols.

Their surrender was forced through the collaboration of 55IB, Marugong LGU’s initiative to resolve local conflicts such as rido(clan wars) and to end extremisim

Lt. Col. Franco Raphael Alano, Commanding Officer of 55IB, stressed that after a month of negotiations and dialogue with the LGU of Marugong, sultans datus and relatives, the DI members, decided to surrender.

Lt. Col. Alano further assured, in collaboration with the local government units, will assist them as they reintegrate to the mainstream society.

Likewise, one of the surenderee, alias Jamil, (not his true name) revealed that they also decided to surrender after realizing that their acts were against the teachings of Islam and that they lost the support and sympathy of their proponents.

Meanwhile, Jose Maria Cuerpo II, Commander of 103rd Infantry Brigade, urged the remaining DI members to lay down their arms and end the senseless violence in the Lanao provinces.

“We will remain relentless in our campaign against the remaining DIs in the province, we will also intensify our reintegration efforts to address not only the needs of our returnees, but of their families’ as well.” Col Cuerpo added.

The four former extremist are currently undergoing custodial debriefing and will later undergo medical and physical examination to ensure their heath.

Food packs containing 25 kilos of rice, other assorted food items and hygiene kits care of OPAPP were also handed over to the former extremist.

Maj. Gen. Gene Ponio, commander of the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division lauded the 55IB and the civilian stakeholders involved in the successful surrender of the DI members.

“Truly, our campaign in against terrorism also relied on the cooperation and involvement of the local government units, datus, ulamas and even the local populace itself”, said Maj. Gen. Ponio.
