SAN FERNANDO CITY, April 30 (PIA) -- An official of the 702nd Infantry Batallion of the Philippine Army (PA) said the National Identification System will help in the fight against insurgency.

“I fully support the implementation of the system because this will provide the data needed for us to determine the identity of our law abiding citizens and those who want to tear down our government," Brigade Commander Col. Audrey Pasia said.

He stated this after a recent encounter of the military with some members of the New People's Army in Quirino, Ilocos Sur while local social welfare officers were distributing Social Amelioration Program (SAP) cash assistance to its beneficiaries in the far flung area of the town.

“If only the data is available, it will be easier for us to cross reference our beneficiaries in areas like this, and we would be able to protect our public servants, residents, and other front liners who really want to help their fellow Filipinos,” he said.

Pasia also said Filipinos should not worry and fear about the identification system and the information they will provide because there is an existing law on confidentiality of data.

“Ang may ayaw lang dito (system) ay iyong mga NPA at mga komunista kasi wala silang ID, ayaw nilang matunton sila dahil ang gusto lang nila ay sirain ang ating gobyerno,” said Pasia.

Also, Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) public affairs officer Lt. Geraldson Pascual, PN said, “I highly encourage this system to be implemented as soon as possible because if only we knew the data of our people, help from the government might have been given faster.”

Both expressed their approval of the ID system when they guested in the Kapihan sa Ilocos Special COVID-19 Edition held at the Philippine Information Agency, this city, on April 24.

The 702nd Infantry Batallion is only one of the agencies which closely monitors insurgency in the provinces of the Ilocos Region pursuant to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Executive Order 70 or the whole-of-nation approach to end local communist armed conflict in the country.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Statistics Authority Region 1 earlier announced that the pilot testing of the registration for the ID system in the region will be launched in Ilocos Norte by July 2020 until further notice. (JCR/JND/AHFF, PIA-1)
