Two persons believed to have links with the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) yielded firearms and ammunition during separate operations in Escalante City, Negros Occidental on Friday morning.
Capt. Cenon Pancito III, public affairs chief of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, said police and military troops served three search warrants in the northern Negros city, and two operations yielded positive results.
In Barangay Balintawak, Imelda Sultan, a member of the National Federation of Sugar Workers, was apprehended during the first operation at about 6 a.m.
Operatives seized three caliber .45 pistols with 17 bullets, seven grenade launcher ammunition, two improvised explosives, three mobile phones, and subversive documents.
Sultan is reportedly a deputy secretary for finance and a former political instructor of the NPA.
In Barangay Jonob-jonob, Ma. Lindy Perucho, also an alleged deputy secretary for finance and former political instructor, was arrested shortly after at 6:10 a.m.
Recovered during the operation were one caliber .38, one caliber .45, and three grenade launcher ammunition.
Sultan and Perucho, both in the custody of the Escalante City Police Station, were the respondents in separate search warrants dated October 30 and signed by Executive Judge Cecilyn Burgos-Villavert of the Regional Trial Court Branch 89 in Quezon City.
These were issued for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Law.
The arrest of the suspects and the recovery of firearms and ammunition in Escalante City came a day after similar operations were conducted in the offices of progressive groups in Bacolod City.
Thursday afternoon's raids in four areas yielded 32 firearms, 130 rounds of ammunition, and five explosives, as well as subversive documents and led to the arrest of 55 persons, including 14 minors.
