LABANGAN, Zamboanga del Sur, —  The Mechanized Infantry Division (MID), Philippine Army has an ongoing seven projects worth P114 billion under the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program.

This was disclosed by Major General Robert Dauz, MID commander during the 43rd founding anniversary of the 1st Cavalry (Tagapanguna) Squadron held recently at Camp Jacobo Zobel in Pulacan, Labangan town.

Dauz, who was the event’s guest of honor and speaker said the projects are composed of firepower upgrades, acquisition of light tanks, flight simulators, air defense surveillance radar systems, recruitment of efficient and responsive personnel, among others.

It can be recalled that on June 20, 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte approved the Armed Forces modernization program's shopping list for Horizon 2. The list of projects will be implemented within the year 2018 to 2022, with a budget of about P300 billion.

The revised AFP modernization program is divided into three horizons. The first was implemented from 2013 to 2017, the second is from 2018 to 2022, while the third is from 2023 to 2028.

Dauz said this year the MID has an ongoing firepower upgrade which composed of 44 remote control weapon stations (RCWS) and 5 armored mortar carrier system (81mm).

He said the firepower upgrade was done at the maintenance battalion of the Mechanized Infantry Division at Camp O’donnell, Capas, Tarlac.


“Every time the foreigners will do the firepower upgrade, 2 teams from the division were assigned to observe so that their will be a transfer of technology,” he added.

Dauz is optimistic that the 44 RCWS and the 5 armored mortar carrier system will be completed by the end of September, adding that 23 of the 44 RCWS were already completed while 5 of it were sent to Jolo.

He also said that by next year, 15 Armored Mortar Carrier (120 millimeter) and 44 light tanks (both trucks and wheeled) with 105 mm main gun worth more than P9-B will also be procured.

“These computer based battlefield management system (BMS) equipment will be given to the operating units, the infantry and mechanized units,” Dauz announced.

He said all these modernization projects were realized under the administration of President Duterte which seeks to enhance its capabilities against current threats through modernization and capacity building initiatives. (EDT/GCC/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur)
