Government troops neutralized a high-ranking Abu Sayyaf member after eluding arrest in Lantawan, Basilan on July 15.

Arod Wahing pulled his gun and grenade when security forces raided his safe house,” said Brigadier General Fernando Reyeg, Joint Task Force Basilan Commander. “Soldiers immediately reacted and neutralized Wahing before he inflicted damage.”


Troops recovered from sub-leader Wahing an M1 Garand rifle, a Caliber .45 pistol, an MK2 fragmentary grenade, magazines, and rounds of ammunition.



Combined forces of 4th Special Forces Battalion and 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company served the arrest warrant for multiple criminal cases on Wahing in Barangay Parian Baunoh at 3:25am on Monday.

A native of Bud Bunga in Talipao, Sulu, Wahing is tagged in the kidnappings of Ewold Horn in 2012 and the German couple in 2014.

“He is a trusted follower of Abu Sayyaf top leader Radullan Sahiron in Sulu,” added Brig. Gen. Reyeg. “He, however, fled to Basilan to escape the series of armed engagements with military forces in Sulu.”

Troops brought Wahing’s remains and the recovered items to the 4SFBn headquarters for disposition.

“The military beefs up its focused and support operations in the operational area, aimed at running down terrorist groups and ending decades-long reign of discord and instability. Anticipate this campaign will be bolstered and convergence will be established in the hope that we may totally defeat the Abu Sayyaf, and let peace and development reign in Mindanao,” said Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of Western Mindanao Command.
