Two supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)-inspired Dawlah Islamiya have surrendered to military authorities in the province of Lanao del Sur, officials said Wednesday.

Capt. Clint Antipala, the Army’s 1st Infantry Division information officer, said the two supporters surrendered to the 55th Infantry Battalion around 1 p.m. Monday in Barangay Matitikop, Tubaran, Lanao del Sur.

Antipala was unable to disclose the identities of the two surrenderers for security concerns. The surrenderers yielded two caliber .45 pistols.

He said the surrender of the two Dawlah Islamiya supporters was facilitated by Mayor Khaledyassin Papandayan of Tubaran town.

Lt. Col. Ian Noel Ignes, the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion commander, said the two surrenderers revealed that they have provided logistical support to the group of Owayda Marohombsar alias Abu Dar, before his death.

Abu Dar was killed in a clash with government forces on March 14 this year in Brgy. Dinaigan, Tubaran, Lanao del Sur.

Abu Dar assumed the leadership of the Dawlah Islamiya following the deaths of the group’s founding leaders, Omar and Abdullah Maute, during the Marawi battle in 2017.

Brig. Gen. Romeo Brawner, the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade commander, said the death of leaders of the Dawlah Islamiya and the surrender of the members have significantly contributed to the sustained peaceful environment in Lanao del Sur.

Brawner said they will continue to collaborate with local officials and partners in Lanao del Sur “to encourage other supporters or even the locals with loose firearms to surrender and submit themselves to the folds of the law in order to stop the criminalities and attain a more peaceful community.”

Maj. Gen. Roberto Ancan, the Army’s 1st Infantry Division commander, commended the efforts of the troops and Tubaran municipal officials for the successful surrender of the two Dawlah Islamiya supporters.

“We thank the local government and other stakeholders for their continued trust and support to our troops in sustaining an environment conducive for peace and development in the whole province of Lanao del Sur,” Ancan said.
